The simple meals in Mysuru that became my favourite memory

The simple meals in Mysuru that became my favourite memory

As I set out to plan my journey to Mysuru, all that came to mind was indulging in the city’s fabulous palaces, vibrant markets, stunning gardens, and ancient monuments. Of course, food would be one of the things on my mind, but I thought of it in relation to tourism, which is what I believed I would remember most about the city.

What surprised me was how often I found myself reflecting on the very humble meals I ate throughout the tour. Rather than seeking out fancy places, I found myself drawn to humble restaurants offering the simplest yet truly satisfying dishes from Karnataka cuisine. Each breakfast I ate, each thali I tried, and even every cup of filter coffee was genuine and very delightful, to say the least. There was something about eating the food prepared in such a way and with so much affection that was just so satisfying.

Mysuru breakfasts gave my mornings the perfect start

Every morning in Mysuru seemed to begin with the inviting aroma of freshly brewed filter coffee and hot breakfast being prepared in nearby eateries. I quickly developed a routine of starting my day with soft idlis, crisp dosas, fluffy medu vadas, and chutneys that tasted wonderfully fresh. Paired with a steaming tumbler of traditional filter coffee, it was exactly the kind of breakfast that made me want to slow down and savour every bite.

The eateries were full of families, office workers, students, and regulars enjoying their breakfast meals. The sight of the city slowly waking up while having the same breakfast the locals have made the experience feel more real, rather than like visiting another tourist spot. It was not only about the food but also the ambience around it.

Mysuru’s traditional meals reminded me that simplicity is enough

One afternoon, I stopped at a traditional restaurant serving Karnataka-style meals on banana leaves. Within minutes, the leaf was filled with rice, sambar, rasam, vegetable curries, papad, pickles, curd, and a sweet dish that completed the meal perfectly. Everything was freshly prepared and served with genuine warmth.

The food was simple, but each dish was full of individual tastes and flavours. The careful balancing of spices and use of fresh ingredients reflected years of cooking tradition. Sitting at the table, eating slowly and taking my time, made me realise that some of the best meals were the simplest.

Mysuru’s local eateries felt more memorable than fine dining

As the trip continued, I found myself choosing small family-run restaurants over upscale dining venues. Many of these places had simple interiors, handwritten menus, and recipes passed down through generations. They weren’t trying to impress anyone with elaborate presentations. Instead, they focused on serving delicious food that kept people coming back.

A few of my favourite dishes were the ones I encountered at establishments I came across during my strolls in the city or through suggestions from locals themselves. These random discoveries were as much of an experience as any that I had while touring Mysuru’s tourist spots.

Staying in a hotel in Mysuru made exploring local food much easier

One of the best decisions I made during the trip was choosing hotels in Mysuru that offered easy access to different parts of the city. Since I wasn’t spending too much time commuting, I could comfortably visit local cafes, traditional restaurants, sweet shops, and neighbourhood eateries throughout the day.

The convenient location also gave me the freedom to follow recommendations whenever I received them. Whether it was a breakfast spot or the famous dessert shop nearby, I could always go there without having to change my schedule.

Mysuru’s sweets completed every meal beautifully

No visit to Mysuru would feel complete without trying its famous sweets. Naturally, Mysore Pak was the first one on my list. Although I had tasted it before in other cities, enjoying it fresh in Mysuru was a completely different experience. The rich, buttery texture and delicate sweetness made it easy to understand why it has become synonymous with the city itself.

In addition, I got introduced to a few more traditional sweets and savouries by visiting various sweet shops in the locality. Each shop had unique recipes and several regular clients, thus every visit turned into a mini cultural experience. It was not long before choosing a few sweets to take back home became my routine task.

Mysuru’s cafes offered moments to slow down

Between sightseeing and exploring the city, I often stopped at cafes for another cup of filter coffee or a light snack. Some cafes occupied heritage buildings, while others were contemporary spaces with views of quiet, tree-lined streets. Despite their differences, they all shared a relaxed environment that encouraged visitors to linger a little longer.

These moments of calmness turned out to be some of my most cherished experiences. Rather than moving around from one attraction to another all the time, I got to sit down and watch the daily activity happen around me and experience the slower pace of life in Mysuru.

Final thoughts

Before visiting Mysuru, I expected its palaces and heritage to leave the strongest impression. They were indeed remarkable, but it was the city’s simple, home-style meals that stayed with me long after the trip ended. From comforting breakfasts and Karnataka thalis to filter coffee and Mysore Pak, every meal reflected Mysuru’s warmth and tradition.

If you have time, do not restrict yourself to sightseeing tours. Go ahead and try some delicious food items in the city by visiting good eateries, cafes, and dessert houses. It becomes more interesting if you are staying at one of the popular hotels in Mysuru.
