Hotel Algemac circa 1920s, can be seen from Bradley Place.

Editor’s take note: Every month this period, we will publish a column from the Preservation Basis of Palm Beach featuring a landmarked property.

For just about 100 many years, a lodge has existed on Sunset Avenue. Prolonged ahead of there was a Publix or Island Animal Medical center, the hotel now known as the White Elephant began as the Algemac Resort.

The Algemac was intended by architect Martin Luther Hampton in 1923. Hampton researched at Columbia University in New York and designed his way to Florida in 1914. Quite a few of his properties are outlined on the Nationwide Sign-up of Historic Sites, such as the Congress Creating, a historic skyscraper in Miami, and the Colony Resort in Delray Seashore.

With its barrel-tile roof and stucco partitions, the Algemac was one particular of the first accommodations developed in the Mediterranean Revival style. At the time, the major resorts were the Palm Beach Lodge (the site of the present-working day Biltmore), the Royal Poinciana and the primary Breakers. The Royal Poinciana and The Breakers, the two constructed in the 1890s, ended up wooden constructions made in the Colonial Revival model.
